RAPID CITY RUSHMORE ROTARY CLUB
Rapid City, South Dakota
ROTARY INTERNATIONAL is a service organization of business and professional men and women united worldwide who conduct humanitarian projects, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and work toward world understanding and peace.

The philosophy of Rotary can be summed up in two words -- Fellowship and Service. Fellowship is the spirit that animates service. Service is the action that expresses fellowship. Fellowship can best be obtained by attending regular Club meetings and Service can best be obtained by joining a committee.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to his personal, business, and community life;
The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

RUSHMORE ROTARY HISTORY Rapid City Rushmore Rotary Club received its charter on March 12, 1986. The Rapid City Rotary Noon Club sponsored us. The two major projects supported by our club are fund-raisers for Storybook Island ($25,000 per year) and the Black Hills Childrenís Home (BHCH) ($45-50,000 per year). However, we have other community and international service projects that are listed on page 3.

The first Rotary club in the world was organized in Chicago, Illinois on February 23, 1905. Paul P. Harris, a young lawyer, together with a group of men in a spirit of friendship and understanding, each of whom was engaged in a different form of service to the public. That basis for membership, one person from each business and profession in the community, was recently changed. The 2001 RI Council on Legislation agreed that the same classification could be held by up to five members, or 10 percent of members in clubs of 50 or more. At first, the members of the new club met in rotation at their various places of business, and this suggested the name "Rotary."

Since 1905, the ideas of Paul Harris and his friends have become ideals, which have been accepted by people of practically all nationalities, and many political and religious beliefs. In January 2001, there were approximately 1.2 million Rotarians and approximately 29,500 Clubs in 163 countries. Learn more about RI at www.rotary.org.
